Touring Handbook  3: Tour Finances

Tour Budget

Preparing a tour budget is an exercise in determining allowances and setting limitations. Be realistic but also flexible, taking into account the many contingencies – the “what-ifs” – of touring. Unless there is some intangible rationale that exceeds financial gain, a tour must guarantee that all costs and expenses will be covered by the revenue earned.

The budget will include:

  • Anticipated revenues such as performance fees, workshop fees, government grants and more.
  • Anticipated expenses, including three categories of expense:
    • Pre-Tour: costs associated with selling your tour and preparing to go on the road.
    • Touring: costs incurred on the road, including personnel, travel, accommodation, per diems, equipment rental, etc.
    • Post-Tour: costs associated with completing your tour, including personnel for undertaking presenter correspondence and reports.
