Deadline

Any time before your departure date

Applicants who wish to have the results before their departure should apply at least six weeks in advance.

Note: This program does not replace travel grants from other Canada Council programs. If the proposed travel activities are eligible for support from other disciplinary sections’ programs (Audience and Market Development, Dance, Inter-Arts, Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, or Writing and Publishing), applicants must apply to those programs.

These grants contribute to travel costs associated with participation in professional and career development activities in order for applicants to network, share knowledge, gain skills in specific arts practices and engage in dialogue about equity in the arts.

Applicant Eligibility

To apply to this program, you must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. You do not need to be living in Canada when you apply.

You must also be a professional artist or arts professional who is culturally diverse, Deaf or has disabilities.

The Canada Council’s definition of a professional artist is someone who:

  • has specialized training in the arts (not necessarily in academic institutions)
  • is recognized as a professional by his or her peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition)
  • is committed to devoting more time to his or her artistic activity, if financially possible, and
  • has a history of public presentation.

In addition, you must have been practising as an artist for at least two years.

To be considered an arts professional by the Canada Council, you must be someone who:

  • has specialized knowledge of or training in one or more arts practices, arts-related trades and skills, or arts administration/management
  • has been actively involved and employed in the above capacity for at least two years, and
  • is recognized as a professional by her or his colleagues and peers in the arts sector.

Grant Amount

You may apply for one of the following fixed amounts to help cover your travel costs, based on excursion fares: $500, $750, $1,000, $1,500, $2,000 or $2,500. However, the two highest amounts ($2,000 and $2,500) are available only if you are travelling to or from northern Canada or to international destinations other than the United States and Europe.

These grants cannot be used for travel that occurs before the date that the application is submitted. You might not be awarded the full amount requested.
