Program Description
The Canada Council defines integrated arts as professional artistic activities with a singular artistic vision that combine art forms, or integrate existing art forms into its own distinct form. To be eligible for funding from the Integrated Arts and Contemporary Circus Art Program, the proposed integrated arts activities must fall outside the framework of existing funding programs offered by the Canada Council’s Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, or Writing and Publishing sections.
For in-depth information about integrated arts, please consult Opening up Space: Toward an Expansive Vision for Multidisciplinary Arts in Canada. For in-depth information about artists and community collaboration (which is referred to below), please consult IMAGINE - An External Review of the Canada Council for the Arts’ Artists and Community Collaboration Fund. (You can find these documents on the Inter-Arts Office web page of the Canada Council website.)
The Canada Council defines contemporary circus art as a form of artistic expression that integrates the mastery of one or more circus techniques in an original and innovative artistic concept of this art form. The practice, discourse and works are aimed at the creative evolution of this art form. Eligible contemporary circus art techniques are those recognized by professional circus arts schools such as the National Circus School.
For examples of grants previously awarded by the Inter-Arts Office, consult the Searchable Grants Listing at www.canadacouncil.ca/grants/recipients.
Note that you can get a print version of any Inter-Arts Office document by contacting the Inter-Arts Office.
This program is open to Aboriginal arts organizations and arts organizations of diverse regional and cultural communities of Canada.

Artists and Community Collaboration
This is an arts process that actively involves professional artists and non-arts community members working together on creative and collaborative projects. For more information, go to the Artists and Community Collaboration Program (ACCP) link on the Inter-Arts Office web page.
Artists and community collaboration is recognized as an eligible arts practice in all programs of the Inter-Arts Office.

Applicant Eligibility
Eligibility Criteria for Individual Artists
- To apply to the Touring Grants component of the Integrated Arts and Contemporary Circus Art Program, you and your co-applicants (if there are co-applicants) must be working in integrated arts or contemporary circus art and you must meet the Canada Council for the Arts’ definition of a professional artist or collaboration (see the Definitions of Terms section). If your activities relate to a specific Canada Council discipline (for example, theatre or music), you must apply instead to a program in that disciplinary section.
- You and your co-applicants (if there are co-applicants) must be Canadian citizens or have permanent resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (if you are a permanent resident, you must provide evidence of your legal status). Applicants who are Canadian citizens do not have to be living in Canada when they apply.
- If you or your co-applicants (if there are co-applicants) are graduate students, you are eligible only if you meet the Canada Council’s definition of a professional artist and your proposed activities are not related to your program of study. (You must include in your application a letter from the graduate student program director to verify this information.)
- You or your co-applicants (if there are co-applicants) are not eligible if you are full-time undergraduate students at a school, college or university.
Eligibility Criteria for Organizations
- To apply to this program, your organization must be working in integrated arts or contemporary circus art and must meet the definition of an artists’ collective or incorporated group. (See the Definitions of Terms section in these guidelines.) If your activities relate to a specific Canada Council discipline (for example, theatre or music), you must apply instead to a program in that disciplinary section.
- If your organization is receiving operating support or annual programming support from the Inter-Arts Office, it is not eligible to apply to most other Canada Council programs. It is, however, still eligible for capacity building grants from the Equity Office or the Aboriginal Arts Office and for touring grants from the Inter-Arts Office.
- If your organization is receiving operating funding from another Canada Council disciplinary section, it is not eligible to apply to the Inter-Arts Office programs.

Grant Amount
You may apply for a maximum of $30,000 in each competition, including applications to the ACCP. In exceptional situations (for example, for tours that involve very large-scale works) you may request more than $30,000, but only with the written consent of the Inter-Arts Office.
